Иванъ Григорьевичъ былъ однимъ изъ ведущихъ спеціалистовъ Россійской имперіи въ области проектированія надводныхъ кораблей и подводныхъ лодокъ, возглавлялъ разработку и строительство первой россійской подлодки съ двигателями внутренняго сгоранія ("Дельфинъ") офиціально зачисленной въ списки кораблей Россійскаго флота.
Бубновъ являлся фактическимъ основателемъ и первымъ начальникомъ кораблестроительной чертёжной Морского техническаго комитета (наслѣдникомъ которой является современное ЦКБ МТ „Рубинъ“), гдѣ были разработаны проекты подводныхъ лодокъ "Касатка", "Минога", "Акула", типовъ "Барсъ" , "Моржъ" ("Нерпа"). По его проектамъ было построено 32 субмарины.
