Был в истории Америки такой «салют Беллами» — ритуал произнесения клятвы верности флагу США.

Во время произнесения слов «Клянусь в верности моему флагу» нужно было стоять «смирно», правая рука поднималась к груди, потом резко вскидывалась вверх и направлялась прямо на звёздно-полосатый флаг.

Этот ритуал впервые выполнил баптист Френсис Беллами на Дне Колумба 12 октября 1892 года.

Ритуал быстро получил название «салют Беллами» и стал широко использоваться в скаутских организациях — в основном среди детей и юношей то есть.

Однако уже 22 декабря 1942 года Конгресс официально принял поправки к Кодексу о флаге США и клятву флагу стали произносить, только положив правую руку ладонью на сердце.
