Sa puissance et son autorité étaient telles que les dirigeants de l’Empire byzantin, prolongement oriental de l’Empire romain, le reconnurent formellement comme le véritable empereur de la Rome occidentale, héritier de la Rome antique et défenseur de la foi chrétienne. Ce couronnement donna naissance à une confédération qui allait durer près d’un millénaire : le Saint Empire romain germanique.
