در اولین روزهای زمستان ۱۳۵۳ همزمان با سفر ژاک شیراک نخست وزیر وقت فرانسه به ایران اعلام شد که متروی تهران توسط یک شرکت فرانسوی طی ۱۲ سال ساخته خواهد شد.
