Мэр Риги Вилнис Кирсис заявил, что происходящее в Грузии вызывает обеспокоенность, и отказ от европейского пути не отвечает интересам грузинского народа.
Соглашение, подписанное 3 апреля 2007 года, охватывало сотрудничество в таких областях, как торговля, экономика, наука и техника, гуманитарные и культурные связи.
В настоящее время у Риги есть 25 городов-побратимов на пяти континентах.
