Университет был основан миссионерами в 1866 году как Сирийский протестантский колледж. Это был первый современный университет в регионе, и там учились многие просветители, деятели культуры и политики. Отметился колледж и первым студенческим протестом в арабском мире.

Мечеть построили в 1887 году братья Байхум – торговцы-сунниты из известной бейрутской семьи.

Впоследствии мечеть перестраивалась и ремонтировалась. Да и море уже давно не подходит к ней так близко, как в конце XIX в. Их разделяют дорога и променад, где люди всячески проводят досуг (часто с удочками).
