بر اساس گزارش‌های سیره، ترورهای مخالفین پیامبر، اقدامات خشنی بودند که ایشان در جهت تثبیت اسلام در عربستان انجام داد. در پژوهش‌های مدرن [غربی]، روایات مرتبط با این وقایع، عموما با وصف «کاملا خالی از هرگونه تمایلات [جعل]» قضاوت می‌شود. اما به نظر می‌رسد که این ادعا، ریشه در عدم شناخت کافی نسبت به دو امر دارد: یکی، انگیزه‌های پنهان منابع این روایات و دیگری، میزان کاربست شیوه‌های ادبی [داستانی] در منابع سیره.
پژوهش حاضر، می‌کوشد تا toposهای ظاهر در گزارش‌های ترور مخالفین سیاسی پیامبر را شناسایی کند؛ بدین وسیله، میزان وابستگی این داستان‌ها به یکدیگر آشکار شده و امکان وام‌گیری ادبی بین آن‌ها نیز روشن می‌گردد. این تحلیل نشان می‌دهد که کاربرد ابزارهای ادبی در منابع [سیره]، گسترده‌تر از آنی است که در نگاه اول ممکن است به چشم آید. گزارش‌های مورد بررسی ما، شباهت‌های تکان‌دهنده‌ای را در قالب و نیز محتوا، به نمایش می‌گذارند؛ تا حدی که اعتبار این بخش از سیره را به عنوان منبعی سرراست برای بازسازی زندگی پیامبر به طور جدی با اشکال مواجه می‌سازد.
