В 1712 году именным указом Петра I была основана казённая оружейная фабрика. К тому времени Тула давно славилась мастерами-оружейниками, включая Никиту Демидова, который в 1695 году основал в Туле частный оружейный завод.
Фабрика, основанная Петром, начала работу уже в 1714-м, а к 1720-му стала крупнейшим предприятием, на котором трудилось более 1200 оружейников.
В 1812-м правительство обяжет тульский казённый завод выпускать по 7000 ружей ежемесячно. 28 февраля 1912 года в ознаменование 200-летнего юбилея Императорского Тульского оружейного завода ему присвоено наименование «Тульский Императора Петра Великого оружейный завод». Традиции тульских оружейников продолжаются и в наше время.
