В арабській орнітас транскрибувалося як урніс. У ній вже існувала інша назва — منقار الدجاجة (дзьоб курки), але прижилося запозичення.
Коли арабські тексти перекладали латиною, це слово, імовірно, прийняли за назву ірису (Erysimon) — і переклали як ab ireo, додавши прийменник ab.
Потім хтось вирішив, що транслітерація виконана неправильно, а правильно — al-bireo.
У 2016 році Міжнародний астрономічний союз стандартизував власні назви зір і закріпив за цією зорею назву Albireo. Українською, відповідно — Альбірео.
