Картину маслом на холсте «Богомольцы» приобрели на аукционе Sotheby’s в Нью-Йорке за $50 тыс. в 2003 году, пишет РБК. Лот был представлен как работа неизвестного автора второй половины XIX века.
Изображение передали на экспертизу в Русский музей, где эксперты атрибутировали (то есть опознали) ее как полотно одного из братьев Васнецовых. «Богомольцы» оказались утерянным произведением раннего периода художника и вариацией полотна «Нищие-певцы» 1873 года
