بزرگترین آتشفشان منظومهٔ شمسی کوه اُلمپوس (Olympus Mons) در سیارهٔ مریخ است. این کوه سه برابر بلندتر از اورست (۲۷ کیلومتر) و قطر قاعده‌اش بیش از ۶۰۰ کیلومتر می‌باشد؛ دهانهٔ این آتشفشان قدیمی (Caldra) -جایی که قبلا از آن فوران‌های اصلی انجام می‌شده- ۳ کیلومتر عمق و ۲۵ کیلومتر عرض دارد. رویدادهای زمین‌شناسی ثبت‌شده در سنگ‌های این منطقه ۴ میلیارد سال از تاریخ مریخ را در بر می‌گیرند. برخی از جریان‌های گدازه در کوه اُلمپوس یا مجاور آن، باتوجه به تصاویر موجود، فاقد دهانه‌های برخوردی هستند؛ به این معنا که فعالیت‌های آتشفشانی در چند میلیون سال اخیر رخ داده‌است. بنابراین نباید زیاد تعجب کنیم اگر این آتشفشان در آینده فعالیت خود را از سر بگیرد.
