Из Московского зоопарка в зоопарк Пхеньяна переехали африканский лев, два бурых медведя, два домашних яка, пять белых какаду, двадцать пять фазанов разных видов и сорок уток-мандаринок.
Центральный зоопарк Пхеньяна работает с 1959 года. В нём обитают как привычные для Кореи виды животных, так и экзотические. Например, слоны, бегемоты и жирафы. Передача животных из России стала возможной благодаря вхождению зоопарка Пхеньяна в Евроазиатскую региональную ассоциацию зоопарков и аквариумов (ЕАРАЗА).
