This has been a bit of a dark and difficult holiday season for me (Huwila), and I apologize for the lack of original content. However, I have very high hopes for 2025. One thing that brought me great delight today was the arrival of a Secret Santa present. Every year, my husband and I, along with our friend group, exchange Secret Santa presents, and this year a dear friend gifted us An Early Meal: A Viking Age Cookbook & Culinary Odyssey by Daniel Serra and Hanna Turnberg. I snapped a few pictures of it in the waning light of the old year — would you guys like to see me make some recipes from it? (Not sure where to procure horse meat, but I can try! 😅)

Telegram has acted to remove public channels affiliated with terrorism, but Pavel Durov reiterated that he had no business snooping on private conversations. If you initiate a Secret Chat, however, then these communications are end-to-end encrypted and are tied to the device you are using. That means it’s less convenient to access them across multiple platforms, but you are at far less risk of snooping. Back in the day, Secret Chats received some praise from the EFF, but the fact that its standard system isn’t as secure earned it some criticism. If you’re looking for something that is considered more reliable by privacy advocates, then Signal is the EFF’s preferred platform, although that too is not without some caveats. He floated the idea of restricting the use of Telegram in Ukraine and Russia, a suggestion that was met with fierce opposition from users. Shortly after, Durov backed off the idea. In addition, Telegram's architecture limits the ability to slow the spread of false information: the lack of a central public feed, and the fact that comments are easily disabled in channels, reduce the space for public pushback.
