Ранее президент России Владимир Путин обсуждал по телефону с Токаевым возможность участия компании «Росатом» в строительстве первой АЭС в Казахстане. Этот же вопрос Токаев затем обсуждал с премьер-министром РФ Михаилом Мишустиным.
«Росатом» рассчитывает войти в международный консорциум, который будет строить АЭС в Казахстане. Также в консорциум войдут компании из Франции, Китая, Южной Кореи. Начало работ запланировано на первую половину 2025 года. Площадка выбрана в Жамбылском районе Алматинской области.
Казахстан решил построить АЭС из-за того, что в республике наблюдается дефицит электроэнергии и есть большие запасы урана.
