پس از شکست در جنگ‌های قادسیه و جلولا، یزدگرد سوم تلاش کرد ایران را بازپس بگیرد.
او پس از جنگ نهاوند از ری به اصفهان، کرمان و در نهایت مرو گریخت. در مرو، ماهوی حاکم منطقه به او خیانت کرد و در نهایت یزدگرد به دست آسیابانی کشته شد. پس از مرگ او، خانواده‌اش به چین پناهنده شدند.
