قال أبو جعفر (ع) : « يقول : يا ليتني اتخذت مع الرسول عليا وليا: ﴿ يََا وَيْلَتىََ لَيْتَنِي لَمْ أَتَّخِذْ فُلاََناً خَلِيلاً يعني الثاني لَقَدْ أَضَلَّنِي عَنِ اَلذِّكْرِ بَعْدَ إِذْ جََاءَنِي ، يعني الولاية وَ كََانَ اَلشَّيْطََانُ و هو الثاني لِلْإِنْسََانِ خَذُولاً ﴾ » .
عن الباقر و الصادق (ع) : « السبيل هاهنا : علي (ع) ﴿ يََا وَيْلَتىََ لَيْتَنِي لَمْ أَتَّخِذْ فُلاََناً خَلِيلاً* `لَقَدْ أَضَلَّنِي عَنِ اَلذِّكْرِ ﴾يعني عليا (ع) » .
روي عن الباقر و الصادق (ع) : «أن هذه الآيات نزلت في رجلين من مشايخ قريش، أسلما بألسنتهما و كانا ينافقان النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) و آخى بينهما يوم الإخاء، فصد أحدهما صاحبه عن الهدى، فهلكا جميعا، فحكى الله تعالى حكايتهما في الآخرة، و قولهما عند ما ينزل عليهما من العذاب، فيحزن و يتأسف على ما قدم، و يتندم حيث لم ينفعه الندم» .
