Александр посвятил жизнь занятию русским эпосом. Знания, вынесенные с филологического факультета, активно пополнял в фольклорных экспедициях, много общаясь с деревенскими носителями традиции. Былинам и особенно технике эпического сказывания посвятил целую кандидатскую.
Много выступает во всех уголках нашей страны, рассказывая о старом и новом в русском сказительстве.
