После войны Николай исполнил мечту — закончил университет. Он учил детей в Дагестане, потом — в Мелитополе. Директор школы, председатель совета ветеранов, депутат. Он боролся за права тех, кто прошел через ад. И город отметил его заслуги — Николай Голофаст стал почетным гражданином Мелитополя.
