«Учительская газета» одной из первых публиковала работы легендарного Василия Сухомлинского, с её страниц читатели узнавали об идеях Виктора Шаталова, Эдуарда Днепрова, Шалвы Амонашвили и других педагогов-новаторов. В её редакции появилась инициатива проведения конкурса профессионального мастерства «Учитель года».
