Николаев окончил Сасовское летное училище гражданской авиации в 1995 году, в 2017-м – Ульяновский институт гражданской авиации по специальностям "Эксплуатация летательных аппаратов" и "Эксплуатация воздушного транспорта и управление воздушным движением".
Был пилотом Ан-24/26, Ан-2, L-410, Boeing 757, 737. В 2017-2022 гг. работал командиром Boeing 737 в "Аэрофлоте", после чего вернулся в "Якутию" в качестве замгендиректора по управлению безопасности полетов.
