Британский искусствовед Ричард Пеннингтон считает, что кот срисован с более ранней гравюры того же автора, которая называлась просто – “Портрет кота”.
Возможно, это аллегорическое изображение самого Тишайшего царя.
Мне эта версия нравится. У нас до сих пор не было русского монарха в образе кота, хотя почему бы и нет, собственно?
