В отношении Попова продолжаются следственные действия по делу о превышении должностных полномочий во время пребывания на должности командующего 58-й Армией. Ранее ожидалось, что Попов будет уволен сразу после возникшего конфликта с начальником Генштаба Герасимовым, но решение об увольнении застопорилось, а Следственный комитет продолжает разбирательство с целью выявить максимально возможное количество нарушений со стороны Попова. Примечательным является также и то, что ранее публично поддерживающий Попова депутат Гурулев прекратил попытки вступиться за опального генерала.
