До проведения президентских выборов в мае временным президентом станет спикер Сената Илие Боложан.
Второй мандат Йоханниса истёк ещё в конце декабря, однако в связи с аннулированием президентских выборов Конституционным судом он решил остаться на посту до избрания нового главы государства, что было воспринято шагом на грани законности.
