В январе 1859 г. Менделеев наконец получил разрешение на заграничную командировку "для усовершенствования в науках". Но покинул Петербург он только в апреле после завершения курса лекций в университете и окончания занятий во 2-м Кадетском корпусе и Михайловской артиллерийской академии.
Менделеев выехал из Петербурга, не имея еще четкого представления о том, в каком из научных центров Европы он будет работать. После месяца, проведенного в поездке по разным городам, он остановил свой выбор на Гейдельберге, где в знаменитом университете работали Р. Бунзен, Г. Кирхгофф, Э. Эрленмейер и другие крупные ученые.
Здесь в разное время проходили стажировку молодые ученые, ставшие в дальнейшем выдающимися деятелями русской науки и культуры: Н. Н. Бекетов, И. М. Сеченов, С. П. Боткин, А. П. Бородин и многие другие.
