“Merry Xmas and a happy New Thor!” said a 1950 ad that promoted the world’s first hybrid washing machine called Automagic, which was available from Thor, an American manufacturer of household appliances whose name implied that its products were a godsend. The Automagic was a hybrid because it could function as an automatic washing machine and a dishwasher. The dishwashing mode required the use of a designated rack, which was installed into the tub, and was activated at the turn of a switch (one only had to be careful not to select “Spin-Dry”). The Automagic was released in the 1940s and discontinued in the 1950s – even though the manufacturer claimed that none of the parts that touched clothes touched dishes, some people simply could not stand the idea of washing clothes and dishes in the same tub.

Interestingly, some of you may have seen a similar contraption in Soviet households. It was available from Kharkov Electromechanical Works as Kharkov – KhEMZ and was almost an exact replica of the American one.

Andrey, a Russian entrepreneur living in Brazil who, fearing retaliation, asked that NPR not use his last name, said Telegram has become one of the few places Russians can access independent news about the war. But because group chats and the channel features are not end-to-end encrypted, Galperin said user privacy is potentially under threat. But Telegram says people want to keep their chat history when they get a new phone, and they like having a data backup that will sync their chats across multiple devices. And that is why they let people choose whether they want their messages to be encrypted or not. When not turned on, though, chats are stored on Telegram's services, which are scattered throughout the world. But it has "disclosed 0 bytes of user data to third parties, including governments," Telegram states on its website. Official government accounts have also spread fake fact checks. An official Twitter account for the Russia diplomatic mission in Geneva shared a fake debunking video claiming without evidence that "Western and Ukrainian media are creating thousands of fake news on Russia every day." The video, which has amassed almost 30,000 views, offered a "how-to" spot misinformation. Apparently upbeat developments in Russia's discussions with Ukraine helped at least temporarily send investors back into risk assets. Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a meeting with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko that there were "certain positive developments" occurring in the talks with Ukraine, according to a transcript of their meeting. Putin added that discussions were happening "almost on a daily basis."
