“Merry Xmas and a happy New Thor!” said a 1950 ad that promoted the world’s first hybrid washing machine called Automagic, which was available from Thor, an American manufacturer of household appliances whose name implied that its products were a godsend. The Automagic was a hybrid because it could function as an automatic washing machine and a dishwasher. The dishwashing mode required the use of a designated rack, which was installed into the tub, and was activated at the turn of a switch (one only had to be careful not to select “Spin-Dry”). The Automagic was released in the 1940s and discontinued in the 1950s – even though the manufacturer claimed that none of the parts that touched clothes touched dishes, some people simply could not stand the idea of washing clothes and dishes in the same tub.

Interestingly, some of you may have seen a similar contraption in Soviet households. It was available from Kharkov Electromechanical Works as Kharkov – KhEMZ and was almost an exact replica of the American one.

In a message on his Telegram channel recently recounting the episode, Durov wrote: "I lost my company and my home, but would do it again – without hesitation." Apparently upbeat developments in Russia's discussions with Ukraine helped at least temporarily send investors back into risk assets. Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a meeting with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko that there were "certain positive developments" occurring in the talks with Ukraine, according to a transcript of their meeting. Putin added that discussions were happening "almost on a daily basis." One thing that Telegram now offers to all users is the ability to “disappear” messages or set remote deletion deadlines. That enables users to have much more control over how long people can access what you’re sending them. Given that Russian law enforcement officials are reportedly (via Insider) stopping people in the street and demanding to read their text messages, this could be vital to protect individuals from reprisals. Overall, extreme levels of fear in the market seems to have morphed into something more resembling concern. For example, the Cboe Volatility Index fell from its 2022 peak of 36, which it hit Monday, to around 30 on Friday, a sign of easing tensions. Meanwhile, while the price of WTI crude oil slipped from Sunday’s multiyear high $130 of barrel to $109 a pop. Markets have been expecting heavy restrictions on Russian oil, some of which the U.S. has already imposed, and that would reduce the global supply and bring about even more burdensome inflation. At the start of 2018, the company attempted to launch an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) which would enable it to enable payments (and earn the cash that comes from doing so). The initial signals were promising, especially given Telegram’s user base is already fairly crypto-savvy. It raised an initial tranche of cash – worth more than a billion dollars – to help develop the coin before opening sales to the public. Unfortunately, third-party sales of coins bought in those initial fundraising rounds raised the ire of the SEC, which brought the hammer down on the whole operation. In 2020, officials ordered Telegram to pay a fine of $18.5 million and hand back much of the cash that it had raised.
