🔻سالانه صدها میلیون تن ضایعات پلاستیکی در جهان تولید می‌شود و دانشمندان به دنبال روش‌های جدیدی برای بازیافت این ضایعات به محصولات باکیفیت هستند. اما بازیافت مکانیکی فعلی باعث کاهش کیفیت پلاستیک می‌شود.
🔻بازیافت شیمیایی جایگزین بهتری است که پلاستیک‌های باکیفیت جدید تبدیل می‌کند.این روش شامل تجزیه مولکول‌های بلند پلاستیک به اجزای پایه( مونومرها) آن‌هاست که می‌توانند دوباره به پلاستیک‌های باکیفیت تبدیل شوند و چرخه‌ای پایدار ایجاد کنند.
🔻محققان دانشگاه ETH زوریخ با استفاده از هیدروژن و کاتالیزور حاوی فلزاتی مانند روتنیوم، پلاستیک‌های پلی‌اتیلن و پلی‌پروپیلن را تجزیه کرده و مولکول‌های کوتاه‌تری تولید کرده‌اند که می‌توانند بازیافت پلاستیک‌ها را بهبود بخشد و مسیر را برای بازیافت در مقیاس بزرگ هموار کند.
