30 января на авиабазе Ирума Воздушных сил самообороны Японии был представлен самолёт Kawasaki C-1 в специальной окраске, названной «Феникс».
Ливрея была нанесена на второй прототип - б/н 28-1002, транспортного самолета Kawasaki C-1. Все самолёты этого типа должны быть выведены из эксплуатации в этом году. В этой связи мотив «Феникса» передает послание вечного полета.
C-1 был разработан в 1966 году компанией Nihon Aircraft Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (NAMC), которая к тому моменту разработала YS-11, первый японский пассажирский самолёт со времен Второй Мировой войны.
После анализа проекта программы NAMC решила, что японский конгломерат Kawasaki Heavy Industries будет выступать в качестве генерального подрядчика по созданию транспортного самолета. Именно поэтому самолет носит название Kawasaki С-1.
Всего был построен 31 экземпляр машины, включая прототипы и специализированные машины.
Второй прототип совершил первый полет 16 января 1971 года и был передан заказчику 20 марта того же года. С-1 оснащаются двумя двигателями Pratt & Whitney JT8D.
