Эта линия не прекратилась и с гибелью самой Византии, точно так же как Европа продолжала подражать (Западной) Римской империи спустя века после её крушения.
В XVIв она даже получила дополнительный импульс в виде концепции Третьего Рима – Москвы как наследницы собственно Рима и Константинополя.
Такой ход мысли типичен для варварских королевств, в Европе наследником Рима не объявлял себя только ленивый: варварская (подражательная) культура всегда пытается копировать существующие высокие формы начиная с организационных.
