16 декабря 1986 года молодежь вышла на площадь имени Брежнева с требованием отменить назначение Геннадия Колбина, который накануне возглавил республику. Митинг разогнали, на следующий день перед зданием правительства были уже толпы.

Спустя 5 лет, 16 декабря 1991 года Казахстан провозгласил независимость.

"A spike in inflation rates has preceded economic recessions historically and this time prices have soared to levels that once again pose a threat to growth."
