В отличие от традиционных методов кражи данных, того же фишинга, здесь сам владелец карты сознательно, хоть и под давлением, генерирует виртуальный образ своей карты в мошенническом приложении. Это делает взлом более сложным для обнаружения, ведь в системе банка не фиксируются подозрительные запросы на перевыпуск карты или утечку данных.
