После школы Родион Нахапетов поступил на актёрский факультет ВГИКа (мастерская Юлия Райзмана) и окончил его в 1965 году. В 1972 году он окончил режиссёрский факультет ВГИКа. С 1978 года — актёр и режиссёр киностудии «Мосфильм». Известность пришла к нему после выхода на советские экраны двух картин Эльёра Ишмухамедова под названием «Нежность» и «Влюбленные».
