В ноябре 1989 закончил службу и вернулся на родину, а уже 23 ноября началась борьба за независимость Южной Осетии, в этой борьбе Маирбег был в первых рядах, тогда он еще не знал, что это борьба продлится долгих 19 лет. Маирбег участник Южноосетино - грузинского конфликта (1991-1992); Осетино - ингушского конфликта (1992); Абхазо - грузинского конфликта 1992-1993); Осетино - грузинского конфликта (2004) и (2008). Во всех этих войнах он видел много смертей, в том числе и смертей своих друзей, которые умирали у него на руках, и сам был трижды ранен. Представлен к ордену «Уацамонгае» 16 ноября 2019 года ушел из жизни как патриотом Осетии, настоящим воином и просто хорошим человеком.
