Немецкая военно-морская компания Thyssenkrupp и финская инжиниринговая фирма Elomatic подписали контракт на проектирование сопровождение строительство нового ледокола Polarstern 2 для научно-исследовательского института Института Альфреда Вегенера в Бремерхафене, Германия.
По планам судно должно заменить существующий исследовательский ледокол Polarstern в 2030 году.
Судно будет оснащено широким спектром современного научного оборудования и лабораториями для проведения различных исследований климата и морской среды. Корпус судна позволяет ему работать в льдах толщиной до 1,8 метра. Двигательная установка ледокола предназначена для использования метанола в сочетании с аккумуляторными батареями.
Стоимость Polarstern 2 оценивается в 1,185 млрд евро. Длина судна составит 160 метров, ширина — 27 метров. На борту судна смогут разместиться до 90 ученых и 50 членов экипажа.
