Административный центр района не из древних и славных. В досоветский период, большая для северной России деревня, чуть больше 200 человек. Тут не было крупных городов, железная дорога появилась перед самой первой мировой, как часть Мурманской ЖД . Разве что Свирь очень важный торговый путь, способствовала развитию региона.

Будущий район, преимущественно был частью Лодейнопольского уезда Олонецкой губернии (около половины его территории, в самом центре). Сюда же относились куски волостей Олонецкого и Петрозаводского уездов, а также северный кусочек Тихвинского Уезда Новгородской губернии.

Но в основе были Подпорожская, Юксовская и Винницкая волости, в следующую эпоху выросшие в целые районы...
