قال أبو الفرج ابن الجوزي رحمه الله: "وينبغي لطالب العلم أن يصحِّح قصده؛ إذ فقدان الإخلاص يمنع قبول الأعمال. وليجتهد في مجالسة العلماء، والنظر في الأقوال المختلفة، وتحصيل الكتب؛ فلا يخلو كتاب من فائدة. وليجعل همته للحفظ، ولا ينظر ولا يكتب إلا وقت التعب من الحفظ. وليحذر صحبة السلطان. ولينظر في منهاج الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم والصحابة والتابعين. وليجتهد في رياضة نفسه، والعمل بعلمه، ومن تولاه الحقُّ وفَّقَهُ".
