We are back with another note on Kostamus authored together with Mikhail Arkhipov. As Mikhail is continuing his forays into what is a true modernist gem of this Karelian town, the Druzhba Cultural Center, to officially photograph its interiors and is badgering the authorities with requests for information, let us wish him good luck in his struggles and take a look at the outpatient medical center and Kostamus's first shopping mall in the meantime.

The outpatient medical center was opened on June 14th, 1984 and was intended to manage a caseload of 600 patients per shift. Medical equipment was provided by Medicor, Hungary, while all of the furnishings were supplied by Finland as part of the contract with the USSR making the center a gesamtuknstwerk of the 1980s. Its orange furniture, which has survived over 40 years in use, is something that sets this medical center apart from similar institutions elsewhere. By the way, the entrance also remains almost intact, but for its sides, which, sadly, have been covered with vinyl siding.

Telegram | DID YOU KNOW?

Date: |

On February 27th, Durov posted that Channels were becoming a source of unverified information and that the company lacks the ability to check on their veracity. He urged users to be mistrustful of the things shared on Channels, and initially threatened to block the feature in the countries involved for the length of the war, saying that he didn’t want Telegram to be used to aggravate conflict or incite ethnic hatred. He did, however, walk back this plan when it became clear that they had also become a vital communications tool for Ukrainian officials and citizens to help coordinate their resistance and evacuations. Again, in contrast to Facebook, Google and Twitter, Telegram's founder Pavel Durov runs his company in relative secrecy from Dubai. Andrey, a Russian entrepreneur living in Brazil who, fearing retaliation, asked that NPR not use his last name, said Telegram has become one of the few places Russians can access independent news about the war. Unlike Silicon Valley giants such as Facebook and Twitter, which run very public anti-disinformation programs, Brooking said: "Telegram is famously lax or absent in its content moderation policy." You may recall that, back when Facebook started changing WhatsApp’s terms of service, a number of news outlets reported on, and even recommended, switching to Telegram. Pavel Durov even said that users should delete WhatsApp “unless you are cool with all of your photos and messages becoming public one day.” But Telegram can’t be described as a more-secure version of WhatsApp.
