🇸🇪 The Swedish government has said it is preparing to change its constitution to be able to take away the passports of people who obtained citizenship by fraudulent means, or who are a threat to the state. This proposal is aimed at immigrants who hold multiple nationalities.

The right-wing government parties and their backers wanted to go further to also be able to revoke the citizenship of gang criminals with dual citizenship, but that did not make it into the committee proposal.

Sweden's minority government receives external support from the Sweden Democrats, whose origins lie in the country’s neonazi movement. The right wing bloc won the 2022 election by an extremely narrow margin, campaigning on a promise to keep reducing immigration and gang crime, which they say are linked.

The immigration spokesperson for the opposition Social Democrats has accused the government of “turning constitution policy into a circus,” and has claimed that they are exploiting the proposal for political ends.
