По предварительным данным, все они входили в одну авиагруппу - истребители должны были нанести ракетно-бомбовый удар по целям на территории Черниговской области Украины, а вертолеты их подстраховать, чтобы в том числе подобрать экипажи Су, если они будут сбиты огнем противника. На аэродром не вернулись все четыре машины.
