WSF - это «свободно летающая» платформа для проведения эксперимента по выращиванию тонких пленок из полупроводников методом молекулярно-пучковой эпитаксии .

Доставка в космос аппарата (он отправлялся в космос трижды) осуществлялась на борту Шаттлов.

Командиром экипажа стал будущий руководитель НАСА Чарльз Болден, а одним из членов экипажа - будущий исполнительный директор по пилотируемым программам Роскосмоса Сергей Крикалев (Фото 2 и 3).

В 1993 году было объявлено о начале программы «Мир» - «Шаттл». В полете STS-60 стыковка американского корабля с российской (советской) станцией не предполагалась, но был организован телемост «Мир» - «Дискавери» - «Американский президент» (фото 4).
