Свою карьеру он начал в дорожной отрасли, работал в системе Федерального дорожного агентства, структурах правительства Москвы, региональных и федеральных органах управления дорожным хозяйством. В правительство Новгородской области Дронов перешел в апреле 2017 г. – после прихода в регион Никитина.
