Баяды были важными в фигурами в завоевательных походах Чингисхана. Монгольские исследователи считают, что один из сыновей Великого хана, Хар Хирүгэ, был выходцем из племени баядов. Также баядские принцесы были женами таких ханов как Мункэ, Аригуна, Хубилая, Тогон-Тимура. Во время джунгарской гегемонии баяды составляли часть населения Джунгарского ханства.
В современное время баядов насчитывается около 60 тыс. человек. В основном проживают в Увс аймаке вместе с монгольскими дербетами.
