20 февраля в ходе Западно-Карпатской наступательной операции войска 4-го и 2-го Украинских фронтов разгромили 17 дивизий и 1 бригаду противника, освободили большую часть словацкой территории и ряд районов Южной Польши.
Войска 2-го Украинского фронта вели наступательные бои в Словакии северо-западнее города Лученец. Восточнее города Комарово на северном берегу Дуная успешно отражали атаки крупных сил пехоты и танков противника.
Уроженец Городищенского уезда Пензенской губернии Николай Артамонов сражался в воздухе Словакии. При штурме скопления вражеской боевой техники в 6 километрах юго-восточнее села Врабле его одномоторный самолет Ла-5 был подбит зенитным огнём. Ко дню последнего полёта на боевом счету Героя Советского Союза значилось 354 боевых вылета, он провёл 55 воздушных боёв, в которых лично сбил 28 самолётов противника и 9 — в составе группы.
