Дело не конкретно в Островском. Но многие привычные на первый взгляд произведения заставляют нас смотреть на себя глазами обозленных поляков/украинцев или кого бы то ни было ещё. Мы впитываем ненависть к своей стране, к её истории просто потому, что знаем о ней с чужого голоса. Поэтому Аракчеев у нас (кстати, у меня скоро будет статья про него) - льстец, подлец, на дуде игрец, а декабристы - образец чести и благородства. Поэтому черносотенцы - немытые погромщики, разбудившие Гитлера, а написавшие письмо микадо интеллигенты - борцы за народное счастье.
