1 января 1931 года была организована Абхазская табачно-опытная станция (АТОС) на базе табаководческого отдела Сухумского субтропического института.
Станция ежегодно производила 10-12 центнеров семян табака и снабжала ими табаководческие хозяйства Абхазии, Аджарии, Азербайджана и Черноморского побережья Краснодарского края.
АТОС предложила к производству более урожайные и устойчивые к болезням сорта табака Самсун-155, Самсун-117, Самсун-Апсны.
Выведенный "Самсун-27" прославил абхазский табак и лежал в основе каждой сигареты в стране во времена СССР.
“Абхазский Самсун – крепкий, красный, пряный табак, известный и в Японии, и в Турции, и в старых странах Западной Европы. Сухумский табак так крепок и так душист, что курить его без примеси более легких и более простых табаков очень трудно. Его подмешивают к самым плохим табакам, и они преображаются, вкус их становится благороден, и горло курильщика не сжимает судорога удушья”. Константин Паустовский.
