База данных собирается силами Православного Свято-Тихоновского гуманитарного университета (ПСТГУ) по благословению Святейшего Патриарха Московского и всея Руси Алексия II с начала 1990-х годов. В сети Интернет база данных доступна с августа 1996 года.
Работа над базой данных координируется Спасо-Преображенским Соловецким ставропигиальным мужским монастырем. К участию в проекте имеет возможность присоединиться любой желающий.
