Под контроль боевиков из группировки «Хайят Тахрир аш-Шам» и их союзников попали городская тюрьма, аэропорт и непосредственно центр 600-тысячного города. Захват населённого пункта произошёл спустя несколько часов после появления сообщений о том, что силы Башара Асада его покидают. При этом продвижению повстанцев не помешали авиаудары, которые нанесла по ним российская авиация.

О широкомасштабном наступлении на «северную столицу» Сирии Алеппо стало известно в минувшую пятницу. Вскоре правительственные войска покинули город, заявив о подготовке «контрнаступления». Президент Сирии Башар Асад, по некоторым данным, в тот момент был в Москве, где его сын защищал диссертацию.
