This has proven to be both a blessing and a curse for Telegram and its users, since these channels can be used for both good and ill. Right now, as Wired reports, the app is a key way for Ukrainians to receive updates from the government during the invasion. A Russian Telegram channel with over 700,000 followers is spreading disinformation about Russia's invasion of Ukraine under the guise of providing "objective information" and fact-checking fake news. Its influence extends beyond the platform, with major Russian publications, government officials, and journalists citing the page's posts. This provided opportunity to their linked entities to offload their shares at higher prices and make significant profits at the cost of unsuspecting retail investors. Since its launch in 2013, Telegram has grown from a simple messaging app to a broadcast network. Its user base isn鈥檛 as vast as WhatsApp鈥檚, and its broadcast platform is a fraction the size of Twitter, but it鈥檚 nonetheless showing its use.
