Цель создания специальной силовой структуры в составе уголовно-исполнительной системы – борьба с преступностью, предотвращение групповых противоправных действий спецконтингента, защита сотрудников УИС от преступных посягательств осужденных.
Более 100 сотрудников «Ермака» награждены наградами, в том числе правительственными, девять сотрудников имеют право на ношение крапового берета.
