واحد من المظاهر العجيبة لغفلة الإنسان عن طبيعة الحياة ورسالة وجوده فيها، ومآل هذه الدنيا كلها إلى الآخرة، هو انغماسنا في رسالة الحضارة الحديثة، رسالة تخدير الألم، وفرط التداوي، وسرينة الإسعاف وعشرات الأسلاك ومريض مسن في مستشفى بارد يرى أهله إن أحس بهم لساعة أو ساعتين لمجرد أن أهله يريدون دفع مشاعر الذنب عنهم، بأنهم قد أحيوا حبيبهم لأطول فترة ممكنة، بتعبير كوبلر: إطالة أمد الحياة بدلًا من جعلها أكثر إنسانية.
هذه الرغبة المحمومة في إنكار الموت والفرار منه، في إنكار الألم والفرار منه، في عدم تقبل المحدودية والعجز= هي نفسها التي تقف خلف غفلتنا عن الآخرة وخوضنا لآلام الحياة التي لا نستطيع تجنبها أو تخديرها، ونحن فاقدين للأمل والمعنى؛ فقد اكتشفنا فجأة أننا أقل تحكمًا مما كنا نظن، وأن في الحياة ما لا دواء له، وصرنا عاجزين تمامًا عن اكتشاف الغرض والمعنى فيما له ألم سواء وجد له دواء أم لم يوجد، وفوق ذلك صرنا نشعر بالصدمة حين نكتشف أننا ويا للعجب: لسنا آلهة.
